This episode begins a new series focused on Live Video in eLearning, Training and Live Online Learning.
I believe that live video is transforming eLearning and driving the creation of TV-style content. It’s a natural fit for “learning experience platforms” that treat learning opportunities more like Netflix episodes than traditional, stand-alone LMS courses. The live video buzz is all about Facebook and YouTube Live, but there are other platforms and tools more relevant and powerful for trainers and corporate learning. Mastering live-video platforms, extends the influence of professional trainers, eLearning developers and Learning organizations.
In this series, I introduce live video and sort through the technology, terminology, and production techniques necessary for success in corporate training. My perspective is based on 20-plus years as an instructional designer, media producer and project manager. I gravitated to video because it has always represented a good value for providing compelling visual support for instructional content.
Several years ago, one of my best clients asked my company to help them broadcast a multi-day instructor-led course to about 300 students located around the country and 40-50 in their corporate training center. The project was a bit out of our comfort zone, but I took it on as an opportunity to stretch our skills and help our client. To make a long story short, the project was a success and the experience showed me the power and potential of live training broadcasts.
Some of what I will share in this series is based on the research and discovery process I used to plan and prepare for that first project. Going in, I had deep skills in video production. However, like many of you, I was a novice to many aspects of live video production like streaming video platforms, live video switching, live event management, and training studio design.
In the years following that first project, we’ve been on a journey to revamp our production processes, studio, and production gear to exploit this new direction.
My goal for this series is to share our research and experience to help you avoid the pitfalls, and offer a road map for using live video in your projects. I’ll provide you with the building blocks that will help you identify and scope opportunities to use live-video in its many forms. I’ll start with a few topics like:
- Live Video delivery technology and platforms
- Using Live Video to reduce eLearning development cost
- And planning a live studio audience to enhance engagement and improve instructor performance.
After that I’ll take your guidance on what to cover next. This is a fascinating area and there are many ways we can go! So join me, on the blog or in the comments section of this video.
